INTERNATIONAL OPERATION ‘CUMBERLAND’

| 28. 02.2025. god.

The Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior is one of 20 police organisations participating in the international operation of Europol – ‘Cumberland’- which resulted in the arrest of 25 persons based on suspicion that they distributed the contents of child pornography generated by artificial intelligence.
The operation was led by the Danish Police, their Unit for countering crime, and, based on the information that the Unit for Countering High-Tech Crime, the Crime Police Administration of the Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior obtained from Europol, a person whose initials are S.T. was identified and arrested in Banja Luka.
The police officers searched the location used by the arrested person, and seized the items that are going to be used in further criminal procedure against this person. A report is going to be submitted to the District Prosecutor’s Office Banja Luka against the S.T. for the commission of the criminal offence ‘Exploitation of Children for Pornography’. It has been confirmed that they accessed the internet platform with the contents of child pornography generated by artificial intelligence, for which the subscription fees were paid via Pay Pal.
The operation ‘Cumberland’ is one of the first investigations including the materials on sexual abuse of children generated by artificial intelligence, which makes it a great challenge for police officers. In addition to the Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior, the police institutions from the following countries also participated: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Canada, Finland, France, Hungary, Germany, Iceland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Great Britain. The action will be continued in future.
