On the occasion of the beginning of the new school year (3 September 2018), the Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior is implementing the action ‘Let’s protect children in traffic’ starting on Monday, 27 August 2018, on the whole territory of the Republic of Srpska with the aim of intensifying drivers’ caution on the roads leading to schools and near schools. The activities of police officers related to protection of children in traffic will be planned in cooperation with the employees in school and in accordance with classes. Police officer’s task will be to primarily find the safest routes for the movement of students from suburban areas and parts of cities where there are no schools. Police officers will sanction the improper parking in school zones, on bus stops, in pedestrian crossing zones, prevent obstructions in pedestrian crossings near school facilities, and initiate setting up pedestrian barriers in order to prevent children from going directly on roads. Other type of activities will be realized in the first half of September, when lectures  for the youngest students, whose topic will be related to safe and proper participation of pedestrians and cyclists in traffic, are going to be organized in cooperation with school directors and pedagogues. Additionally, in September, the presence of police officers will be increased in city zones and near school facilities, and special accent will be on vehicle speed control and respecting pedestrian crossings. Furthermore, police officers will control more often the vehicles performing organized transport of children, so the vehicles whose condition raises doubts of a technical defect will be sent to extraordinary technical inspections. The Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior urges drivers to participate in traffic with increased caution and adjust their speed to road conditions, especially on roads where there is a larger number of students moving along and near schools.
