The 34th anniversary of the establishment of the Fifth Detachment of the Special Police Brigade was marked in Doboj today. During the Homeland-Defence War, the Detachment had up to 430 members, 26 of whom gave their lives for the freedom of the Republic of Srpska.

The commemoration was attended by the Minister of the Interior of the Republic of Srpska, Mr Željko Budimir, and the Director of Police of the Republic of Srpska, Mr Siniša Kostrešević, who laid a wreath at the memorial in front of the Doboj Police Administration building in honor of the 26 members of the Detachment who lost their lives.

“The Republic of Srpska is the legacy of heroes, and that is why it must be preserved and continue to prosper,” Minister Budimir said, adding that the Republic of Srpska was defended thanks also to the sacrifice of members of the Army of the Republic of Srpska, as well as members of the special brigades and special police units.

“They created the Republic of Srpska as a legacy, a legacy of heroes. That is why we remember them and their deeds. And not only that - whenever we mark the anniversary of the establishment of a detachment of the Special Police Brigade, we meet with the surviving veterans and look at how we can help them,” Minister Budimir said.

He said he was pleased that a large number of members of the present-day Police of the Republic of Srpska come from families of former members of the Special Police Brigade, adding that in this way their spirit and their legacy – the Republic of Srpska – live on.
