Considering the bad weather conditions as well as low visibility and in order to increase traffic safety, the Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior urges pedestrians and cyclists, the most endangered category of traffic participants, to pay as much attention to their personal safety as possible.
Namely, in the past nine months of this year, in traffic accidents on the roads of the Republic of Srpska, 28 pedestrians and 5 cyclists died, whereas 81 pedestrians and 28 cyclists were seriously injured.
With the aim of decreasing the number of pedestrians and cyclists participating in traffic accidents it is primarily recommendable for them to use the areas intended for the movement of these participant categories in traffic. Also, in order to cross roads, it is obligatory to use pedestrian crossings, as well as specially built crossings or pedestrian passages, or the shortest ways if these passages or crossings are more than 100 meters away.
When a pedestrian walks on a public road outside city boroughs, it is obligatory for them to move on the left edge of the road in the direction of movement, whereas cyclists should use the right edge of a road. When there is low visibility during days and nights, it is obligatory for pedestrians and cyclists to wear safety vests.
Additionally, it is very important to point out that a group of people walking on one side of a road must be arranged in one column (one behind the other) and for the cyclists, it is obligatory to wear bicycle helmets.
If the pedestrians or cyclists are under the influence of alcohol or narcotics, they are prohibited from participating in traffic.
The Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior urges the pedestrians and cyclists who participate in traffic to use the regulated personal protection equipment, follow the valid traffic regulations and behave responsibly. The Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior also urges drivers of motor vehicles to pay great attention to cyclists and pedestrians, since they represent highly vulnerable category considering the fact that, in almost all cases, they are the ones who suffer the consequences.
