Minister Lukač with the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro

The Republic of Srpska Minister of Interior Dragan Lukač met today in Banja Luka with the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Teresa Ribeiro. They discussed the instruments for protection of journalists with the purpose of their undisturbed work.
Minister Lukač pointed out that the representatives of the RS MoI had everyday cooperation with media representatives and that their cooperation showed high level of transparency and availability of information to both the media and the citizens of the Republic of Srpska.
Minister Lukač introduced Ms Ribeiro with the situation regarding attacks on journalists, emphasizing that a certain number of cases that were registered in the previous period have been disclosed, and that some of them finished with court verdicts and prison punishments.
During the meeting, both Minister Lukač and Ms Ribeiro placed particular emphasis on threats on social media. They agreed it was necessary to make long-term efforts in finding efficient instruments in countering this form of endangering security.
Representative Ribeiro added that there was nothing virtual in threats on social networks, and that long-lasting harassments often turn into physical attacks.
They both agreed it was necessary to find the best possible legal solutions in terms of media protection. They finally concluded that this was an extremely useful and open meeting and discussion, and that their cooperation should continue in the future period as well.
