THE CONFERENCE DIGITAL WORLD ON THE OCCASION OF THE INTERNATIONAL GIRLS IN ICT DAY

The Republic of Srpska Minister of the Interior stated that digital world had its advantages, but also carried great risks, and that we had to protect the greatest victims of abuse – children.
Minister Karan opened today in Banja Luka the conference Digital World, organized on the occasion of the International Girls in ICT Day. He stated that the Republic of Srpska enhanced its capacities after establishing a separate unit for countering cybercrime.
‘We have detected a number of criminal and organized international local groups that abused children in the digital world. We had a significant number of arrests and disclosed criminal offences in that field’, said Minister Karan.
He stated it was important to have women and girls in the information and communications technology sector and security, and pointed out that 50% of women in the ICT sector of the Ministry hold managerial positions.
As he said, these women were special – they have particular profiles, specific education and capacities.
‘In different ways, through detailed selection we selected the best staff and employed them with the Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior’, said Karan. He added that was important for the developed ICT systems to develop their own protection and copyright.
Head of the ICT Administration of the Ministry, Ms Divna Lovrić Bojanić, said that the conference aim was to empower girls to develop their careers in the field of ICT technologies. She said that cyber security was a special segment, and that there were around four million jobs related to this sector in the world at the moment.
The Ministry organized the conference with the support of the UNDP Development Program to BiH through the project "Strengthening cyber security in BiH" in order to empower girls to direct their education and career in the field of ICT.
The International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in April in more than 140 countries worldwide.
The Republic of Srpska Police Director, Mr Siniša Kostrešević and students of the "Nikola Tesla" High School of Electrical Engineering in Banja Luka also attended the conference.
