Today, the Republic of Srpska Minister of the Interior, Mr Siniša Karan, opened the conference titled ‘Informing the public urgently in case a minor goes missing – Find Me’ in the Republic of Srpska. At the conference, the manner of functioning of the system ‘Find me’ in the Republic of Serbia was presented to the attendees by the representatives of the Republic of Serbia Ministry of the Interior and Mr Igor Jurić. The President of the Centre for Missing and Abused Children from Novi Sad, Serbia.
The Republic of Srpska Minister of the Interior, Mr Siniša Karan, said that the dynamics of introducing the system ‘Find Me’, referring to informing the public urgently in case a child goes missing, depended on technical circumstances. He said that the system ‘Find Me’ represented a special step forward in case a child goes missing.
‘Luckily, we haven’t had a single such case in the last five years in the Republic of Srpska. Even nowadays, in accordance with the laws in force, the Ministry of the Interior is undertaking several measures and activities immediately upon a report that a child went missing or was abducted’, Minister Karan said. He explained that, according to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code, a search is activated immediately when there is a suspicion that a situation has the elements of criminal offence of a missing child or child abduction.
‘The intention is to use the system ‘Find Me’ to strengthen the activities of the Ministry when such an information is obtained, for the whole community to be included immediately, and every citizen to provide support to the police officers’, Minister Karan pointed out. He said that the first moments are often of key importance and crucial for action in such situations so the tragedies would not occur.
Minister Karan reminded that the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska adopted the amendments to the Law on Police and Internal Affairs last week, which enabled the Ministry of the Interior to initiate all the activities for the software for the system ‘Find Me’ to be made.
Assistant to the Secretary of the Republic of Serbia Ministry of the Interior, Mr Milan Andrić, pointed out the readiness of the Republic of Serbia to provide every type of support for the system ‘Find Me’ to be introduced in the Republic of Srpska, and wished there was never a need to use it in future. He reminded that, in October the previous year, the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Serbia implemented such system, which existed in 22 European countries, and was adapted to the needs and conditions in Serbia. ‘We hope we will have an integrated system that would cover both areas in future’, Mr Andrić added.
The President of Centre for Missing and Abused Children from Novi Sad, Mr Igor Jurić, said that the initiative to introduce the system ‘Amber Alert’ in the region was started in 2015 and that it was nowadays that it obtains its full sense.
‘I am grateful that the Republic of Srpska Ministry of the Interior recognised this as an important model of searching for the missing children, and that, in addition to Serbia, the Republic of Srpska would also have this system for informing public in case a child goes missing’, Mr Jurić added.
He invited the governments of other countries in the region to implement this type of system.
